Terry McCaleb, Clint Eastwood, a top FBI investigator, is on the trail of a serial killer when he\'s forced into retirement because of heart trouble. After a transplant, performed by heart surgeon Bonnie Fox, Anjelica Huston, McCaleb is approached by Graciela Rivers, Wanda De Jesus, who knows that he was given the heart of her murdered sister; she begs McCaleb to solve the mystery of her sister\'s apparently motiveless death and, against his doctor\'s advice, McCaleb begins an unofficial investigation. Clint Eastwood is one of the last of the great Hollywood professionals, and Blood Work is a thoroughly accomplished thriller, distinguished by an ingenious screenplay by Brian Helgeland which departs from Michael Connolly\'s book in most interesting ways. As in Space Cowboys, Eastwood plays an ageing, vulnerable man, and plays him beautifully; though the inevitable romance - which is taken from the book - seems a bit unnecessary. Alongside the director\'s stellar performance is a most engaging turn by Jeff Daniels as an amiable drop-out who chauffeurs McCaleb around because he\'s not allowed to drive. Filled with suspense on various levels, this is a top-notch thriller which deserved more of a launch than it\'s getting here in Australia.
