Hodson, best known for writing the upcoming Transformers spinoff Bumblebee, also worked on the development of a Birds of Prey project featuring Batgirl.
The bat signal looked all but extinguished after Whedon quit the project in February admitting "it took me months to realise I really didn't have a story."
Hodson wrote the screenplay for thriller Unforgettable starring Rosario Dawson and horror Shut In starring Naomi Watts.
Batgirl's most famous iteration is in the TV series Batman first appearing in 1967 as Batman sidekick, played by Yvonne Craig. Batgirl's hidden identity was then Barbara Gordon, the life of whom the film will also portray. But the character first appeared in the DC comics in 1961 as a love interest for Robin and whose hidden identity was first Betty Kane.
There's nothing like the original: catch double episodes of Batman, at the same bat time (Fridays, 7.30pm) and the same bat channel (SBS Viceland) or after it airs on SBS ON DEMAND.
And if that's not enough, listen to Batmanland - a podcast dedicated to discussing that week's episodes and all things Batman.
