What is Audio Description (AD)?

Audio Description (AD) is the narration of visual and non-verbal elements of a program during gaps in dialogue. It offers people who are blind or have low vision an understanding of what is being shown on screen. Additionally, it has also been utilised by auditory learners, children, non-native speakers (including second-language learners), and readers with reduced literacy (e.g. dyslexia and aphasia).

As with closed captions, audio description can be turned on or off as needed, but is not available with all television programs.

Why is Audio Description important?

Audio Description (AD) is important as it allows people who are blind or of low vision to access documentaries, dramas and films just like everyone else.

AD helps to ensure that enjoying quality series and films with family and friends is something all Australians should have access to.

Does all content have Audio Description available?

SBS aims to provide AD for the widest range of content as appropriate, from gripping documentaries such as Alone Australia to popular dramas such as Homeland and Rogue Heroes.

These programs will have the ‘AD’ icon located within the program page. We aim to grow the number of these over time.
