IN the latest episode of SBS’ movies and TV culture podcast The Playlist (which plays below), Nick and Fiona sit down with none other than Willem Dafoe. Dafoe, in Australia to shoot Aquaman on the Gold Coast, joined director Jennifer Peedom (Sherpa), to talk about the new immersive documentary Mountain, which he narrates.
BAFTA-nominated director Peedom’s Mountain is a joint collaboration with the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s Richard Tognetti, that examines our collective fascination with and fear of, conquering mountains. Dafoe’s distinctive growl enunciates the poetry of Robert Macfarlane in the supporting narration.
Listen to Willem Dafoe on The Playlist (from 5:00)
Dafoe’s career credits run the gamut of boundary-pushing indie cinema, and mega-budget superhero franchise films, as the current Aquaman/Mountain duties demonstrate.
In a dual interview with Peedom, Dafoe reveals how and why he overcame his general reluctance to do voice-over work, to support the film, and in a wider chat about his storied career, we ask him whether there’s any truth to the rumour that he was originally going to play The Joker in the 1989 Batman movie.
…And Nick ticks an item off his Bucket List by quoting one of the funniest lines from Auto Focus at the man who uttered it in the film.
