Talented Canadian actress Sarah Polley read a short story in the New Yorker by Alice Munro called The Bear Came Over the Mountain. So moved by Munro’s beautiful tale of love and loss, Polley knew she had chanced upon the right story for her feature film debut as a writer/director.
Away from Her deals with Fiona’s decent into Alzheimers and it’s effect on her 50 year marriage to Grant. It poignantly delves into past actions and their future consequences; and memories and regrets.
It is an incredibly moving and mature screenplay from such a young filmmaker"¦ Polley is only 27. She captures the complexities of a long relationship with such insight that it is astounding.
Having previously worked with Julie Christie, Polley knew that she and no one else could play the graceful and dignified Fiona"¦ how right she was. It is a tour de force performance from Christie.
Celebrated Australian teacher Lindy Davis has been Christie’s acting coach for years and yet again she has done an amazing job. I wouldn’t mind betting that Christie gets an Oscar nomination for her portrayal, just stunning!
Canadian Gordon Prinsent is equally moving as Grant. It is his plight as the husband being left behind that you feel for. And his relationship with the great Olympia Dukakis is so awkward and real that it is quite uncomfortable to observe.
Sarah Polley is a force to watch out for. Everything from the production values to the music score hits the right note. I think we are witnessing the beginning of a mighty career.
Away From Her is complex and compelling, I urge you to go see it for yourself"¦ 4 stars.
