Harry Potter author JK Rowling has reportedly teamed up with Warner Bros. to write a film trilogy based on the world of Harry Potter.

Rowling will turn her 2001 wizard textbook Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them into three movies, according to The New York Times.

Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them is all bout the magical creatures in the Harry Potter universe.

The first in the new film series has been described at "neither a prequel or a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world".

Warner Bros. boss Kevin Tsujihara says the three instalments will follow the adventures of Newt Scamander, a magical creatures expert known as a "magizoologist".

The story is set in New York, 70 years before the Potter series begins.

Production and release dates are yet to be determined.

The Potter books spawned a total of eight movies, starring Daniel Radcliffe as the young wizard, and raked in $US7.7 billion ($A8.35 billion) worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film series of all time.
