Klumps, The Review

Sherman Klump is back - and so is his nemesis, Buddy Love. In the 1996 remake of the classic Jerry Lewis comic variation on Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Eddie Murphy played the enormously overwight prof and the badass, sleek fellow he turns into. The earlier film also had a scene in which Murphy played various members of his own family - and the sequel expands on that idea so that the Klumps pretty much take over - Murphy plays 9 roles, and there`s a great deal of movie magic from master makeup artist Rick Baker on display - with some pretty amazing scenes of Murphy acting with Murphy. The trouble is, the filmmakers seem to be so entranced with the cleverness of the makeup that they forgot the script; The Klumps is an unusually witless and vulgar variation on the earlier film with the usual strenuous efforts at bad taste and the klunkiest plot developments. It`s an on-going problem with so many Hollywood films; genuine wit, a well-constructed screenplay, some kind of emotional involvement - all these essential ingredients are sacrificed in the dubious name of technical excellence.
