Nurse Jackie
Across seven brilliant seasons of this multi Emmy Award-winning show, the hugely talented Edie Falco makes us cheer, despair and hope for better for flawed but dedicated nurse Jackie Peyton. When the first season debuted, The Hollywood Reporter said “Both show and character are something wonderful to behold – and worth taking multiple doses of.” It was a sentiment that applied just as much at the end as the start.

Blue Lights
The Guardian declared this Belfast-set drama’s third season “it’s finest yet” saying “it is rapidly becoming one of the greatest TV series in existence”. Strong praise but well deserved. From season one, which introduced trainee officers in the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) – Grace (Sian Brooke), Annie (Katherine Devlin) and Tommy (Nathan Braniff) – through season two, where the trio and colleagues including Stevie Neil (Martin McCann) deal with the a loss on the force and a city awash with drugs, and into the powerful season three, Blue Lights has been praised for its strong storylines, emotional depth, realistic portrayal of the challenges of police work and strong cast. A Best Drama Series winner at last year’s BAFTA’s and at this year’s Irish Film and Television Awards, Blue Lights is more than just a great cop show; it’s a story where, as McCann notes, there’s something extra in the characters at the heart of it all.

Northern Exposure
If you’ve not discovered this quirky gem, and you’re looking for something to immerse yourself in, look no further, with more than 100 episodes across six seasons. The Emmy-winning series stars Rob Morrow as a recent med school graduate who owes four years of medical service to Alaska because of a condition of his student loans. After relocating to the remote fictional town of Cicely to settle his debt, it isn't long before the brash New York City native realises the unique eccentricities of the town's inhabitants. A hilarious and beautifully written culture clash, Northern Exposure is an offbeat Emmy and Golden Globe winner.

With the abrupt end to her marriage, Marcella returns to work and is assigned to one of her old cases, after a series of killings occur carrying the same hallmarks as the unsolved murders from more than a decade ago. But Marcella has more than a case to solve: she deals with occasional blackouts, and soon it seems she might be a suspect herself.

Writing about organised crime is risky but that's what Roberto Saviano did with his bestseller Gomorrah, which was adapted into a movie (also streaming at SBS On Demand) and then TV series, which across five gritty seasons takes viewers deep into the dark heart of the Camorra, the fierce Neapolitan crime organisation. As the action unfolds, Ciro (Marco D' Amore), right-hand-man of clan godfather Pietro Savastano has his loyalty tested. When Pietro decides to sacrifice the lives of many of his own only to make a blood-drenched statement to a rival clan boss, something dies in Ciro – for one of the many victims of the bloodshed is his foster father. When Pietro is imprisoned, Ciro has to protect the next in line, Gannaro (Salvatore Esposito) while nursing plans for revenge. mob executions, secret deals with rivals, drug shipments and more all swirl around in a gripping story underpinned by powerful performances.
