Maynard to head up AFTRS producing department

A legendary filmmaker is set to take the reins of the producing department at the national film school.

Australian producer John Maynard will head up the producing department of the national film school, The Australian Film Television and Radio School.

AFTRS chief executive Sandra Levy said that having "one of this country's most successful and prolific producers" at the helm of the producing department would translate into exciting possibilities for the students.

Maynard is renowned for his ability to spot new talent, having produced the debut feature films from directors Jane Campion (Sweetie), Vincent Ward (Vigil, The Navigator), Rowan Woods (The Boys), Robert Connolly (The Bank,) and Richard Roxburgh (Romulus, My Father).

He has been involved with independent film distribution for over 25 years with his company Footprint Films, and since 1995 he has worked with business partner Robert Connolly in production and distribution through both Footprint and Arenafilm.

Maynard is replacing Vincent Sheehan in the AFTRS role. Sheehan was appointed to the position in March but his contract included an option to leave if one of his projects in development advanced to the next stage.

His upcoming projects include The Hunter, an adaptation of Julia Leigh's novel with director Daniel Nettheim, and the off-beat thriller Valve, with director Andrew Lancaster (Accidents Happen).

Maynard will commence his three-year term on July 5.
