After their mother's death Damian – Alex Etel, and Anthony – Lewis McGibbon, move to a new housing estate with their father Ronnie, James Nesbitt. Damien has visions; saints appear, imparting wisdom and advice. He seems to know them intimately, when they were born, when they died and eerily, the grizzly circumstances of their demise. When a bag of money literally falls out of the sky Damian wants to do the saintly thing and give it to the poor. But his brother has other ideas.
Talk about genre hopping – from druggies to zombies, now Danny Boyle gives us wholesome family entertainment. His highly imaginative film takes us deep into the mind of the child yet remains full of adult humour. It's a modern day parable, combining elements of high drama and comedy that play out in a surreal way. A smart and endearing magical journey about faith and hope that avoids saccharine sentimentality. At last an original children's film that the patron saint of cinema would declare a miracle.
