The wedding about to happen has been arranged between the beautiful Aditi, Vasundhara Das, and the successful Texas-based Hermant, Parvan Dabas. Aditi has been having an affair with her married boss and is loathe to break the connection. She comes from a well-to-do Punjabi family based in Delhi. Her father Lalit, Naseeruddin Shah, is skating on thin financial ice but nevertheless has employed wedding planner P.K. Dubey, Vijay Raaz, to put on an opulent display. Dubey seems to have fingers in a lot of pies but when he spies the family's maid Alice, Tilotama Shome, he experiences a coup de foudre. Meanwhile the women of the family seem to enjoy life and one another enormously.
This vastly entertaining film won the Golden Lion in Venice this year. Some people thought it was a bit lightweight for such an award but in fact director Mira Nair, together with her screenwriter Sabrina Dharwan, have created an exuberant tapestry of Indian life that spans continents, languages, generations and family skeletons. Nair keeps her camera on the move exploring a myriad of characters and conversations. She`s served by a splendid cast who obviously entered into the spirit of the film with gusto. The soundtrack makes you want to get up and dance. The film's an explosion of colour, character and music, it's Bollywood not just embracing Hollywood but giving it a huge hug.
