Marco Bechis's Birdwatchers was described by The Guardian as “both a devastating portrait of Brazil's indigenous populations in the 21st century and a tribute to the resistance of the Guaraní-Kaiowá”, a tribe fighting to regain their ancestral lands, fighting back against the and farmers who have driven them away. According to anthropologists, approximately two-thirds of Brazil’s 60,000 Guaraní live in Mato Grosso do Sul. They have been in the area from as early as the fourth century but have been pushed from the area in the last century by the growth of Brazil’s agricultural industries.

Xingu_704.jpg
Director and co-writer Cao Hamburger tells a 20-year saga of three brothers who left their city lives to work with the indigenous tribes of Xingu as part of a major works initiative of the Brazilian government. The plan was to 'take control' of the deeply-forested sertão hinterland by building new cities and infrastructure, and the film follows the brothers’ struggles to have the indigenous tribes’ lands declared a national park. The film charts 20 years in the brothers’ lives – from post-WWII – the mid-1960s as their unique personalities become a help and a hindrance in their ongoing negotiations with authorities and elders alike.
