Oprah Winfrey received three standing ovations for her speech accepting her Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes. Her central message was directed at young girls watching: "A new day is on the horizon."

The multi-hyphenate's powerful speech resonated at the Golden Globes, the first major event in the annual awards season, since Hollywood began dealing with revelations of rampant sexual harassment and abuse of women in the entertainment industry, and beyond.

Winfrey, wearing black like almost every other woman in attendance, alluded to the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements, saying "we all" have experienced a culture "broken by brutally powerful men", and speaking of "tyrants and victims and secrets and lies".

She praised journalists for uncovering stories of abuse, and focused on the experience of Recy Taylor, a black woman from Alabama who was gang-raped by six white men as she walked home from church in 1944, and who recently passed away without ever seeing her attackers face justice.

"For too long women have not been heard or believed if they dared to speak their truth to the power of those men, but their time is up. Their time is up. Their time is up."

Winfrey, the first African American woman to receive the industry honour, next stars in Ana DuVernay's A Wrinkle in Time.
