If Only is a poor person`s Sliding Doors. This curious, and decidedly unappealing, British-Spanish co-production was made in London by a Spanish team headed by director Maria Ripoll with a mixed British and Spanish cast. Douglas Henshall plays a would-be actor devastated when Sylvia, Lena Headey, the woman with whom he`s lived with for six years, tells him it`s all over - not that we blame her one bit... But he`s given a second chance when, in a drunken stupor and in pouring rain, he meets some magical garbage men who seem to be able to turn back the clock. But the fresh start doesn`t come without its own complications... This very derivative piece of whimsy starts with the disadvantage of a gratingly unappealing performance from Douglas Henshall in the lead - but that`s not its only problem. The direction and writing are uninspired, and the fantasy fails to work on any level. Even the English title is prosaic - it was originally called The Man With Rain In His Shoes, which certainly has more poetry than the film itself.
