The Peacemaker is the first film to emerge from the new DreamWorks Pictures with Steven Spielberg, David Geffen and Jeffrey Katzenberg as its principals - and guess what? - it`s a rollicking action adventure. Just when the Russians are dismantling their store of nuclear weapons, a renegade general swipes a payload and is selling to the highest bidder - nuclear bombs are worth quite a lot on the international market these days. Trying to defuse this volatile international emergency are Julia Kelly - Nicole Kidman - who`s a smart cookie in the White House Nuclear Smuggling Group, and Thomas Devoe - George Clooney - a gung-ho army intelligence officer. She wants to work with someone who knows how to take orders from a woman, and he spends the rest of the film telling her what to do; it`s quite amusing really, but it also has its thrilling moments... It`s so arrogantly American, this film..... at one stage a character says disaparagingly of their allies, the Russians, `they wouldn`t know how to find snow in winter` - that`ll do wonders for international relations in Moscow... but if you can bear with the gung-ho and skewed politics The Peacemaker moves at a ripping pace, it`s been really well made by first time feature director Mimi Leder who worked on the television series ER with Clooney. The two leads are attractive, with Clooney getting to do all the fun stuff while Kidman does a lot of horrified looking on. I suspect The Peacemaker will be remembered as a guilty pleasure by me, I was quite taken with all the action sequences, even though the film ends with a major cliche.
