Ever since music videos exploded in the '80s with the creation of MTV, they have become a genre in their own right, rivaling with the most opulent Hollywood superproductions and showcasing the best talent from the cinema world. Many acclaimed filmmakers, such as Michel Gondry, Spike Jonze, David Fincher, Anton Corbijn, started their careers directing music videos. Even directors already enjoying a great reputation like to try their hand at video clips. Brian De Palma famously directed Bruce Springsteen's "Dancer in the Dark" and Martin Scorsese had already filmed Taxi Driver and Raging Bull when he was enlisted by Michael Jackson to film his clip for "Bad".
More recently, Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood, Inherent Vice) directed Radiohead’s music video for "Daydreaming", and you can now watch it in all its 35mm print glory for the first (and only) time in Australia at the CLIPPED Music Video Festival. In partnership with MTV and the National Film and Sound Archive, the festival will bring a slice of its program from Vivid Sydney 2016 to Canberra for one night only on Friday 30 September.
In addition to screening high-calibre music videos, the exclusive event will hold a music video exhibition and discussions with a diverse lineup of directors, industry and artists, as well as live music.
