You can understand why filmmakers clamour to make follow-ups to successful movies. There’s more story to tell – and more bucks to be made. But how German director Uwe Boll got to make Blood Rayne II: Deliverance is anyone’s guess.
The first BloodRayne was a huge flop in 2005 and, like Mr Boll’s other movies, it was labelled one of the worst movies ever made.
What it did offer was the depressing spectacle of talented actors Ben Kingsley, Michael Madsen, Michelle Rodriguez and, er, Billy Zane rushing through their lines so they get out and cash their pay cheques.
BloodRayne II doesn’t even have slumming A-listers going for it as it continues the story of our half-human-half-vampire babe.
First time around, Rayne was played by Kristinna Loken, best known as the femme-bot of Terminator 3. This time the role falls to Natassia Malthe, best known for being an, um, Maxum cover girl.
To be fair, she’s not bad, but the premise demands a high camp performance. I mean, come on, she’s up against Billy The Kid, who has somehow gone from being an American gunslinger to a German vampire. His evil plan is to use the new railroad coming through the town of Deliverance to spread vampirism through the United States.
This should be schlocky fun, and there are a few camp lines, but mostly this is just a boring gore-chore.
It’s definitely better than 1966’s similarly themed Billy The Kid Versus Dracula, but that ain’t saying much and BloodRayne 2 rates just one star.
