Retrospective: Christopher Doyle

This month's focus is on the celebrated cinematographer from Sydney.

Over the last twenty years, Christopher Doyle has established himself as one of the most influential cinematographers working in world cinema. An eccentric man of many talents, the Australian-born Doyle left the country in his 20s and travelled the world, working several eclectic jobs before lensing his first film, That Day, on the Beach (1983), the debut from award-winning director Edward Yang. Doyle is best known for his ground-breaking collaborations with celebrated Hong Kong director Wong Kar Wai. Starting with Days of Being Wild (1990), Doyle cemented his reputation with Chungking Express (1994) and later In the Mood for Love (2000), earning the respect of numerous directors and cinemagoers for his distinctive framing and vivid colour saturation. His fluid hand-held camera work proved to be a revelation, too, with many photographers imitating his unique style. Doyle's rhythm with the camera stems from his love of movement and music, once saying, “The relationship between me, the camera and the actor is always a dance.” Doyle has since become a director, though many would say that almost any production that he is a part of is without a doubt a 'Christopher Doyle film.'

SBS is proud to present four films from this wholly original filmmaker.
