Brendan Cowell's Ruben Guthrie will open the 62nd Sydney Film Festival on June 3.

Cowell's story of an advertising executive's battle with the bottle is adapted from his own stage play, and stars Patrick Brammall in the lead role.

Brammall plays the hard-partying adman, who almost loses everything during a binge. His fiancee challenges him to quit drinking for a year. The cast also includes Alex Dimitriades, Abbey Lee, Harriet Dyer, Jeremy Sims, Brenton Thwaites, Aaron Bertram, Robyn Nevin and Jack Thompson.

The film is produced by Kath Shelper (Samson & Delilah), and will be distributed later in the year through Madman Films.
