Dredd

(USA, action/sci-fi)

Director: Pete Travis
Starring: Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, Lena Headey
What's it about?
In a violent, futuristic city where the police have the authority to act as judge, jury and executioner, a cop teams with a trainee to take down a gang that deals the reality-altering drug, SLO-MO. But Ma-Ma, a prostitute turned drug lord, who is operating from a rundown 200-storey highrise where no one from law enforcement has dared venture, is determined to fight back. More modern and darker than the 1995 version Judge Dredd, this new take on the popular comic book character was a hit at the box office.

(USA, thriller)

Director: Nicolas Winding Refn
Starring: Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston, Oscar Isaac, Christina Hendricks
What's it about?
A Hollywood stunt driver by day moonlights as a top-notch getaway driver-for-hire in the criminal underworld. He finds himself a target for some of LA's most dangerous men after agreeing to aid the husband of his beautiful neighbour, Irene. When the job goes dangerously awry, the only way he can keep Irene and her son alive is to do what he does best: drive. Despite its graphic violence proving too much for some critics and viewers, Refn's neo-noir quickly obtained cult status for its 80s esthetics and soundtrack, as well as great performances by Ryan Gosling and his co-stars.

But Ben and Chon refuse and, with the reluctant assistance of a dirty DEA agent, decide to wage a seemingly unwinnable war against the cartel. And so begins a series of increasingly vicious ploys and maneuvers in a high stakes, savage battle of wills.
