Barry Lyndon

PG

United Kingdom, 1975

Genre: Drama, Romance, War

Language: English

Director: Stanley Kubrick

Starring: Hardy Krüger, Patrick Magee, Marisa Berenson, Ryan O`Neal

What's it about?

With a 300 day shoot, and a budget of $11 million (roughly $75 million if adjusted for inflation), Barry Lyndon was one of Kubrick's most ambitious undertakings - especially for its visual style, with most scenes using natural lighting (including candle-lit interiors) and custom-built lenses to give the film the look of an 18th century oil painting. This film details the adventures of Redmond Barry, a young farm boy from a small village in Ireland, who is in love with his cousin Nora Brady. When Nora engages to the British Captain John Quin, Barry challenges him for a duel of pistols. He wins and escapes to Dublin, but is robbed on the road. Without any other alternative, Barry joins the British Army to fight in the Seven Years War.

Full Metal Jacket

MA15+

United States of America, 1987

Genre: Drama, War

Language: English

Director: Stanley Kubrick

Starring: Adam Baldwin, R. Lee Ermey, Vincent D'Onofrio, Matthew Modine

What's it about?

An examination of the Vietnam War and the dehumanising process that turns people into trained killers. Joker, Animal Mother, Gomer, Eightball, Cowboy and more all are plunged into a boot-camp hell pitbulled by a leatherlung D.I. (Lee Ermey) who views the would-be devil dogs as grunts, maggots or something less. This was Kubrick's penultimate film, and there was a 12 year wait for his swansong, 1999's Eyes Wide Shut.
