Director: Daniel Barber

Starring: Michael Caine, Emily Mortimer, Ben Drew

What's it about?Watch Sir Michael Caine in one of his most powerful performances as badass Harry Brown, an elderly ex-marine living in a dingy English housing estate apartment. The escalating crime and violence has made him so frightened that he won’t even use the underpass near his home. Shortly after his wife dies, Harry's best friend is murdered, prompting Harry to seek revenge on the criminal lowlifes who have made his life hell. Ben Drew (also known as hip-hop artist Plan B), who plays young punk Noel Winters, went on to direct his own gritty film about council estate life Ill Manors in 2012.

M

UK, 2006

Director: Stephen Frears

Starring: Helen Mirren, Michael Sheen, James Cromwell

What's it about?See Helen Mirren in her Oscar-winning role as a monarch in the midst of an existential crisis. The leader of House of Windsor comes in for harsh criticism for not 'being there' for her subjects, in the aftermath of Princess Di's shock death. Stephen Frears' film takes us inside Windsor Castle in those crucial first few days, to find a Queen genuinely floored by the outpouring of public grief, and more than a little resentful of the expectation that she cave to tabloid baying and break with established protocol.
