Based on Anton Chekov's legendary 1896 play of the same name, in which friends and family gather at a lakeside Russian estate for a weekend in the countryside. While everyone is caught up in passionately loving someone who loves somebody else, a tragicomedy unfolds about art, fame, human folly, and the eternal desire to live a purposeful life. Moss features in a crucial supporting role as the black-clad, depressive daughter of estate manager Shamrayev (Glenn Fleshler) and his wife Polina (Winningham). “She’s a real badass.” Moss says of her character. “She can be angry and stubborn one minute, and then the next dissolve into tears, and then make a joke. There’s something wonderfully Bette Davis about her."

Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, this sharp satirical comedy from writer-director Ruben Östlund (who also wrote and directed this year's Palme winner, Triangle of Sadness) features Moss in a delicious comic turn as Anne, an American journalist who begins an awkward affair with Christian.

M

USA, 2020

Genre: Drama, Thriller

Language: English

Director: Josephine Decker

Starring: Elisabeth Moss, Odessa Young, Michael Stuhlbarg, Logan Lerman, Victoria Pedretti

What's it about?

In this audacious biopic, Moss plays revered horror author Shirley Jackson as she finds inspiration for her next book (1951's Hangsaman) after she and her husband take in a young couple. Directed by Josephine Decker (Madeline's Madeline), executively produced by Martin Scorsese, and co-starring Australia's Odessa Young, who lauded Moss when talking to SBS Movies in 2020: “Like the rest of us, I’ve been blown away by her work. There’s always something about everything that she does, every decision that she makes, that is a little bit left of centre, and that is why she is so renowned.”
