Sex - The Annabel Chong Story Review

I`m sure a lot of people will be drawn to Sex. The Annabel Chong Story by the notoriety of this documentary`s subject - a woman who had sex with 251 men in a ten hour period. But I don`t think titillation is what you`ll get out of this sad and potentially manipulative tale of a confused young woman from Singapore. Grace Quek is studying at college in Los Angeles when she reinvents herself as Annabel Chong, porn star. She quickly gains a name for herself as Queen of the Gang Bang and then wants to push her fame further by breaking the record of having sex with the most number of men. This documentary shows us the totally ugly people around her in this sleazy industry and her attempts to justify her acts in terms of feminism. The question you ask yourself about Annabel Chong is `why`. And I don`t think the documentary answers that question. Except that there is something pathetic about Grace Quek. It seems that she is both a manipulator and a victim. She even involves her parents, who are unaware of her new profession, in the film, presumably to heighten the film`s emotional impact. I found myself fascinated by Annabel Chong, but ultimately I was suspicious of her and dreadfully sorry for her. David`s comments: What`s the point of this film? Why should we care about this foolish woman? Is the film telling us anything we didn`t already know about sex and the exploitation of it? Where is the audience( I suspect the raincoat brigade, who will come out very disappointed). I don`t get it ( maybe it`s me - maybe it just isn`t my week)
