In Shooting Fish Dylan, Dan Futterman, and Jez, Stuart Townsend, are a couple of likely lads who see themselves as modern Robin Hoods. They`re adept at fooling their guillable customers, to whom they sell supposedly technically advanced computers or home insulation. When Georgie, Kate Beckinsale, comes to work for them they`re both attracted to her; the trouble is, she isn`t what she seems to be. But then, neither are they... This very British comedy about a pair of loveable crooks is doomed by the miscasting of American Dan Futterman in what clearly should have been a role for a British actor. In Sliding Doors, Gwyneth Paltrow went to the trouble of giving us a perfect London accent; Futterman makes no such attempt, and his crass Yank belongs to another film altogether. Despite this, there are some amiable moments in the first half of the film, and Kate Beckinsale is a very likeable heroine; but, towards the end, contrived over-plotting and heavy-handedness doom what should have been the lightest of souffles.
