I wasn`t familiar with Molly Shannon and her creation Mary Katherine Gallagher but I quite enjoyed getting to know her... Mary lives in the ugliest house, with the ugliest lawn and dog in Besamee Heights with her grandmother Glynis Johns who was injured in the car accident which killed Mary`s parents. The one thing Mary wants in life is someone to make out with and get tongue-kissed by.... but candidates are strangely lacking... Mary`s not the most popular girl in school, Evian (Elaine Hendrix) is and it`s Evian who gets Sky (Will Ferrell) ... Mary`s only solution is to become a superstar... It takes a little while to get hooked in to Mary Katherine Gallagher. The movie has a strange tone, it seems like it`s going to be an ugly duckling becomes swan and makes good story and it is, sort of, but the swan never really happens. It defies political correctness and that`s fine but some moments are quite disconcerting... like the armpit habit. It has an honesty within itself and you have to applaud Molly Shannon for being relentless about that. I actually found myself having a good time with this odd little film. There is only one example of bad language and it`s strangely uttered by Glynis Johns... David`s comments:A broadly acted, quite amusing film based on a Saturday Night Live character. Molly Shannon is quite funny as the very plain schoolgirl who wants to be a superstar and who takes place in a Fight VD talent contest. Some sharp satire, and, thankfully, the heroine is never glamorised.
