This afternoon there was a great disturbance on the Internet. It was as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in a collective "Squee"! Something adorable has happened.

The unveiling of the final Star Wars: The Last Jedi trailer revealed a darker film than we've seen previously. For fans, scenes that heavily implied the final moments of Princess Leia were almost too much to watch. The passing of actress Carrie Fisher is casting a dark shadow over the film. This mood was tempered, however, with the glimpse of a beloved porg.

Hardcore Star Wars fans exclaimed with joy when they saw the porg. Meanwhile the rest of us were left with a collective: "What the hell is a porg?"

Take all of my money!

More than an unfortunate Google typo waiting to happen, a porg is the latest adorable character designed to make audiences part with their money for charming merchandise.

Porgs are rich in protein

The first Jedi temple was built on a planet called Ahch-To. We visited the planet at the end of Star Wars: The Force Awakens where we found Luke Skywalker has been living there for some time. Porgs are native to Ahch-To, which immediately raised fear in fans. Knowing that fear leads to anger and that anger leads to hate, actor Mark Hammil was quick to dismiss the possibility that the porgs have been sustaining Luke's healthy appetite. Luke, as per Hammil, became a vegetarian after leaving the family home.

Chewbacca has a therapy porg

It's still a fan theory, but is supported by the porgs appearance in The Last Jedi trailer. Chewbacca has adopted a porg as a therapy animal following the passing of Han Solo at the end of The Force Awakens. While it's possible that 'pet' may be too strong a term and they might just be very good friends, it's unlikely that Chewie is lending the keys for the Millennium Falcon to his new porg pal anytime soon.
