The Beat That My Heart Skipped Review

A frenetic and adrenalin-fueled ride.

Romain Duris stars as Tom, a foot soldier in his father's real-estate business. It's a tough job collecting back rents and evicting squatters. His late mother was a virtuoso pianist, and Tom might have followed in her footsteps, but hasn't played since her death. A chance meeting with her former agent leaves Tom torn between her memory and his father's dependency. Realising an upcoming audition may give him a way out of the brutal family business, he starts rehearsing secretly with Vietnamese music tutor, Miao-Lin, played by Linh-Dan Pham.

The Beat That My Heart Skipped
is a frenetic and adrenalin fueled ride firmly held together by Romain Duris' intense performance. The camera moves constantly, seeking out intimate shots of both beauty and brutality. Director Audiard relies on long takes and single shot scenes to give the film a more realistic tension. This provocative drama exposes the paradox – to either conform or pursue one's passion.
