Directed by Susan Seidelman of “Desperately Seeking Susan” fame, “Boynton Beach Club” is set in sunny, wealthy, tooth-capped Florida.
The director's mother, Florence Seidelman, sent the idea for the film on a post-it note to her daughter. Florence then went on to co-write her first ever film script.
The film concerns a group of retirees who belong to The Boynton Beach Bereavement Club and are nowhere near ready to throw in the dating towel! The club is a hot bed of activity where woman out number the lucky blokes 20:1.
The film doesn't dive too deeply into the aging experience, but it is upbeat and at times self mocking, giving us some lovely moments of surprise.
This oh so light comedy has a cast of actors I haven't seen for a long time. Brenda Vaccaro, Dyan Cannon and the gracefully aged Sally Kellerman, all seem to be having a ball.
I am still marvelling at the fact that Cannon at the age of 70 is shaking her booty in size 0 jeans and has less lines on her face that me… yikes Hollywood is scary!
The standout scenes for me involved resident lady killer Harry's (Joseph Bologna) internet dating attempts. They are poignant and funny and nicely realised.
The film has to be applauded for offering us a look at life beyond the age where movies generally like to take us.
Even though it is not my cup of tea, “Boynton Beach Club” will definitely appeal to a certain niche audience, who are all too often overlooked… I'm giving it 3 stars.
