Without a word of warning, the makers of Danish-Swedish crime series The Bridge recently released the trailer for the show's upcoming fourth and final season. And we couldn't be more excited.
One of Nordic noir's original crossover successes, The Bridge has delivered three dark and twisty seasons to date – and the next one looks set to live up to the series' impressive benchmark. Indeed, creator Hans Rosenfeldt promises season four will kick off with "the most disturbing opening scene ever".
That's saying something for a show that commenced with the discovery of a body sawn in half (later discovered to be two halves of separate corpses) and placed exactly midway between Denmark and Sweden on the bridge connecting the nations that gives the series its name. In the new trailer, scenes depicting a woman being stoned give some indication of what to expect.
But of course, The Bridge has become much more than just a series about horrific crimes and creepy serial murderers. Much of the appeal of the bilingual drama comes from its lead character, Saga Norén, the socially challenged but professionally unrivalled Swedish detective played to perfection by Sofia Helin.

At the conclusion of season three, Saga's future was uncertain following the death of her mother and the subsequent investigation into her possible involvement. In what state we'll find Saga in season four is still very much up in the air. Thanks for nothing, teasing trailer.
Instead, we see Saga's Danish counterpart and occasional lover, Henrik Sabroe (Thure Lindhardt), attending the stoning scene and carrying on the search for his missing children – a storyline which will be resolved this season. Can. Not. Wait.
The Bridge season four is coming to SBS in 2018.
