The cult Scottish writer Irvine Welsh, whose book Trainspotting was memorably filmed by Danny Boyle, provides three short stories for director Paul McGuigan`s confronting compilation, The Acid House.Story One, The Granton Star Cause, describes the bad luck which befalls soccer star Boab, who loses his place on his beloved team, is kicked out of home by his privacy-seeking parents, is dumped by his girlfriend, loses his job - and then meets God in a bar. Story 2, A Soft Touch, is about the amiable Johnny, a very soft touch who marries the pregnant Catriona only to have her openly cheat on him. Story 3, The Acid House, is about a druggie who changes places with a newborn baby. The Acid House is not a travel ad for Scotland: the stories take place in filthy apartment buildings and deal with unattractive, at times rather pitiful, people. The abrasive humour is welcome, but a tendency towards outrageousness is a bit forced; still, the film boasts a certain hypnotic attraction, and the performances are all very good.
