The 2017 Emmy Award nominations have been announced overnight. While the nominations had its usual assortment of expected nominees and surprise snubs (they overlooked Oprah?), this years announcement was notable for the number of new series that have been nominated this year.
As Twin Peaks and last years Outstanding Drama Series winner Game of Thrones were not eligible for nomination this year, it opened the door to new shows like This Is Us, The Handmaid’s Tale, The Crown, Westworld, and Stranger Things.
Genre show Westworld and the again very fashionable Saturday Night Live tied for the most nominations, each earning 22.
We pride ourselves at SBS on curating the world's finest series, so it should come as no surprise that SBS and SBS VICELAND shows were heavily represented in this years nominations.
The Handmaid's Tale has been a strong favourite of critics this year and is considered a strong contender in the Outstanding Drama Series. Series star Elisabeth Moss was nominated in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category, while co-stars Ann Dowd and Samira Wiley were both nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. Former Gilmore Girl Alexis Bledel received an Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series nomination for what many have deemed to be a career best performance. Showrunner Bruce Miller received a nomination for Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series for his work on the phenomenal pilot episode. Directors Reed Morano and Kate Miller were both nominated for Outstanding Director in a Drama Series for their respective episodes 'Pilot' and 'The Bridge'.
The series was also nominated for casting, cinematography, costuming, visual effects, and production design awards.
Ground-breaking comedy Atlanta also received several nominations, with the show nominated for the Outstanding Comedy series award. Series star and creator Donald Glover was nominated for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series in addition to being nominated in the Outstanding Director in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series categories. His brother, Stephen Glover, was also nominated for a writing award for the show. Atlanta received a nomination for casting - a well-deserved nomination considering how many new and diverse faces the series has brought to television through its first season.
The third series of Fargo saw not only a nomination for Outstanding Limited Series, but also series creator and showrunner Noah Hawley receive a nomination for Outstanding Direction in a Limited Series. Ewan McGregor was nominated in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series category for playing brothers Ray and Emmit Stussy. We reckon he deserves two statues if he wins. The fabulous Carrie Coon received an Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series. While it's not an SBS show, quietly we're disappointed she wasn't also nominated for The Leftovers. David Thewlis was nominated for his role as the menacing VM Varga in the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Limited Series category.
Fargo was nominated in the casting, cinematography, single-camera picture editing, hair-styling, music composition, sound editing, and sound mixing technical categories.
One of our favourite shows each week is the topical news comedy show Full Frontal with Samantha Bee. This year the series picked up nominations for Outstanding Variety Series, and Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series. Director Paul Pennolino was also nominated for an Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special award for the Full Frontal special event 'Not The White House Correspondence Dinner'. The writing team picked up a nomination for the special, along with a nomination for the production design.
Brooklyn Nine Nine shared some Emmy love with just one nomination for Outstanding Stunt Coordination for a Comedy Series or Special. We don't know which stunt got the show across the line, but we're sure it was with hilarious consequence.
Two shows running on SBS received nominations for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series, with the hilarious Billy on The Street and Drunk History both recognised in the category.
Viceland series Gaycation with Ellen Page received a nomination for Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program.
Comedian Stephen Colbert will host the 2017 Emmy Awards on Sunday, 17 September (18 September in Australia).
