Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master will open the Cockatoo Island Film Festival when the new event launches in Sydney next month.
The critically acclaimed film will make its Australian premiere at the inaugural Festival on October 24, after enjoying rave reviews at its world premiere in Toronto.

The Cockatoo Island Film Festival is the brainchild of Dungog Film Festival founders, Stavros Kazantzidis and Allanah Zitserman. The four-day event will take over Sydney's harbourside island, Cockatoo Island, a former naval port newly revitalised as an arts precinct (Sydney's 2012 Biennale was predominantly held there).
The full program of the Cockatoo Island Film Festival will be announced on October 3, but other drawcards are the Australian premiere of Tim Burton's Frankenweenie, the multi-chapter/multi-director chronicle of contemporary Cuba, 7 Days in Havana, as well as Frank Khalfoun's slasher horror remake Maniac, and a new Australian sci-fi thriller, Crawlspace.
A documentary program includes the Australian premiere of Everything and Nothing: the Untold Story of 007, a study of the enduring phenomenon that is the James Bond franchise.
The five-day film, music and entertainment event will take place from October 24 - 28.
