Environmental activist, Albert Markovski (played by Jason Schwartzman) leads the Open Spaces Coalition. He comes up against Brad Stand (Jude Law) a corporate climber, and Dawn (Naomi Watts) the face of Huckabees, a chain of retail stores that wants to build on marshland that Markovski's Coalition is protecting. A series of unusual coincidences leads a perplexed Albert to an existential detective agency, run by Bernard and Viviane Jaffe (Dustin Hoffman and Lily Tomlin) where he is paired up with Tommy (Mark Wahlberg) one hell of a disturbed firefighter who has become obsessed with the global effects of petroleum use.
This is an outrageous and terminally zany film that had me laughing to the point of exhaustion. All the performances are solid but the pairing of Tomlin and Hoffman is screen magic. David O. Russell, has done it yet again, a true maverick who now reveals the contradiction in us all, the meaninglessness of our search for meaning. Feeling perplexed? Well you don't have to be. Just sit back and enjoy the ride and you might just heart Huckabees.
