Briggs adapted his stage play of the same name with Thompson, for the screenplay about an indigenous singing troupe who took their soul act on an entertainment tour of duty, entertaining coalition troops during the Vietnam War.

Director Wayne Blair's film is currently reaping record returns at the domestic box office, having taken in excess of $6 million in its first fortnight of release.
