The Sea Inside review: A truly moving story

A profound and challenging film.

Spanish actor Javier Bardem ages 20 years to take the lead in The Sea Inside – based on the true story of Ramon Sampedro, who became a quadriplegic after a diving accident. For 30 years he has struggled against the church and state for the right to end his life with dignity. Cared for by his family, Ramon's world is radically changed by the arrival of two women. Lola Due as – of Talk To Her fame – is Rosa, a single mother who thinks she can change his mind. And Belen Rueda plays Julia, a lawyer suffering a degenerative disease, who takes on Ramon's case.

This profound film challenges us to examine our attitudes to euthanasia. Bardem pulls off a truly magnificent and inspiring performance. Close up cinematography drags the viewer into Ramon's consciousness to feel his despair. Remarkable dream sequences and a worthy supporting cast make this a must see movie for anyone willing to explore the human condition.
