The Son`s Room Review

Giovanni, played by the director Nanni Moretti, is a psychiatrist who lives with his wife, Paola, Laura Morante, and their teenage children, Irene and Andrea, in a provincial port city. They are a very modern, very affectionate family, although Giovanni is not too sure about Irene`s boyfriend; but their world is shattered one Sunday morning when Andrea dies in a diving accident....Coming hard on the heels of Under The Sand and In The Bedroom, The Son`s Room, is another film about bereavement and loss. Giovanni blames himself for not eing with Andrea that fateful day, and is work suffers; there are strains on he marriage, Irene`s sporting ctivities suffer, Laura is consumed ith grief. Moretti is best known in ustralia for his very personal Dear Diary, a film in which he examined his own experiences in an ironic and self-effacing style. But in Italy he`s a household name as a television commentator. The Son`s Room is something of a change of pace for him, and it`s a very beautiful film which not only explores the effects on the family of the sudden and unexpected death of Andrea but, in the last section, introduces a new character who sheds new light on the world of this beloved, much-missed son.
