The Wendell Baker Story Review

Just released on DVD is “The Wendell Baker Story”, starring Luke and Owen Wilson. This is an easy going comedy centred on Wendell Baker, a hopeless dreamer and petty criminal.

Wendell has big dreams to be wealthy and successful without really having to work. After yet another botched crime job that lands him in Jail and loses him his girlfriend, Wendell decides to go straight. Released on parole he lands a job in a retirement home run by a very dodgy nurse.

Written by Luke Wilson and co directed with his brother Andrew,
I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed this film; mainly due to the comedy pairing of the Wilson brothers with the very funny Will Ferrell.

Luke plays Wendell with just the right amount of pathetic-ness. He is so hopeless, particularly when it comes to romance, that you really want him to succeed. And brother Owen is truly wicked and very funny as the corrupt nurse.

Shot with a distinct '70's flavour together with a country rock soundtrack featuring Lyle Lovett, this film will have your toes tapping.

The laid back, at times silly script is aided by the wonderful support cast of grumpy old men, headed by the great Harry Dean Stanton.

“The Wendell Baker Story” is tongue in cheek comedy that's not trying for anything new. If you're a fan of the Wilson brothers, this is a good pick.

For an easy Sunday afternoon watch this film won't disappoint 3 stars. “The Wendell Baker Story” is now out on DVD.
