Sydney commuters did double takes this morning as they were passed by red-robed handmaids on the city's streets.
Women dressed in the iconic robes and white winged bonnets of the handmaids from Margaret Atwood's 1985 novel were spotted on the streets, in train stations, in workplaces, lecture halls and shopping centres ahead of the highly anticipated premiere of the second season of The Handmaid's Tale tonight on SBS at 8.30PM.
People were quick to share their images of the handmaids - and their unease at the grim dystopia they represent.
The Handmaid's Tale, starring Elisabeth Moss, Alexis Bledel, Yvonne Strahovski, Ann Dowd, Joseph Fiennes and Samira Wiley, tells the petrifying story of a future reality where democracy has been overthrown in favour of a totalitarian system run by Christian fundamentalists.
Women have lost all bodily autonomy, and have become property of the government to be used for breeding purposes.
