There`s Something About Mary Review

Just when you thought there were no great laughs left in the cinema along comes There`s Something About Mary from the Farrelly brothers, Bobby and Peter, who gave some of usa taste of their particular brand of humour in Dumb and Dumber. There`s Something About Mary is slightly more sophisticated, but just as insidious. It`s about Mary - Cameron Diaz - and the creeps who are in love with her. Dorky Ted - Ben Stiller - was besotted with her in high school, couldn`t believe his luck when she asked him to the prom after he was nice to her retarded brother. What went wrong with that date sets the tone for the hilarity that follows. Thirteen years later Ted is still seeking love, no-one has been able to replace Mary. He hires sleazy private eye Pat Healy - Matt Dillon - to track her down in Miami. Pat spies on her and falls for her, tells Ted she`s got four children from three different husbands and then moves in for the kill after eavesdropping on her likes and dislikes.Add to the mix Lee Evans as a crippled architect, Lin Shaye`s sun-toasted neighbour and her dog - the dog`s very important to the hilarity of things - Ted`s scabrous mate Chris Elliot and a Greek chorus of Jonathan Richman and drummer Tommy Larkins and you have a wonderfully joyous, non PC comedy that will have you shrieking in the aisles. Cameron Diaz is such a wonderful talent, and she`s gorgeous. Matt Dillon shows he`s prepared to get down and dirty as the sleazeball detective and Ben Stiller is spot-on as the wounded Ted. There are about five set pieces in this film that are hysterically, stomach-wrenchingly funny but writer/directors Bobby and Peter Farrelly don`t lower the gas too much in between. They`re not afraid to venture into the territory of cruel humour. It`s great entertainment like we haven`t had in quite a while.
