Three to Tango Review

This lighthearted comedy is based on a risible premise - through a series of unlikely occurrences Oscar (Matthew Perry) is thought to be gay ... he`s an architect who with his partner Peter (Oliver Platt) is competing for the job of building a cultural centre in Chicago. The mega-rich tycoon to whom they submit their plans is Charles (Dylan McDermott). Charles has a wife, and a mistress - she`s Amy Post (Neve Campbell) and Charles thinks Oscar would be the perfect person to keep an eye on Amy when he`s not able to be around ... poor Oscar, because Amy thinks he`s gay too and he`s starting to fall in love with her ...There`s not a lot of subtlety in Three to Tango but it manages to exude a goodheartedness that makes it fairly inoffensive. Matthew Perry has a likeable presence on screen which helps the film a lot and Neve Campbell matches him with a nice naturalistic performance. Oliver Platt is solid as always on the sidelines ... the director was Damon Santostefano, an award-winning television director making his debut on the big screen and he does an OK job. Some people seem to think the film will be offensive to gays but I can`t see why ... the downside of being sexually constrained in any closet is a point the film is making. This is a real fairy floss movie, it dissolves as soon as you eat it ... David`s comments: TV actors in a telemovie sitcom which makes heavy weather of the boy pretending to be gay who can`t tell the girl he`s not story. The three leads are very dull, but Oliver Platt brings some life to the uninvolving, unconvincing material.
