Timothy Dunphy (Sean Hatosy) known as Dunph to his friends in a small town outside Providence Rhode Island and as Dildo to his father (Alex Baldwin) lives a life of working class ignorance, mainly getting stoned with mates like Drugs Delaney (Jon Abrahams). Until one night he ploughs into a cop car and literally the shit hits the fan... his father`s mates organise a stint for him at a private academy - the supposedly strict Cornwall Academy where sex, drugs and rock `n roll are totally out of bounds... but Dunph manages to circumvent all three... Outside Providence is based on a screenplay by the Farrelly brothers to whom we owe Dumb and Dumber and There`s Something About Mary, based on Peter Farrelly`s novel. But if you`re expecting the outrageous humour of their previous efforts, forget it. This is a film that tracks a semi-realistic arc about a boy from small town working class who has a basic integrity that tends to work wherever he finds himself. The key to the film is the performance of Sean Hatosy, you can`t call it great but he ultimately convinces you it`s real. That`s not a bad performance. Alec Baldwin is the one name star of the film and he too manages to convince you of a working class bloke who just wants the best for his sons. After initial skepticism I came to like this film directed by Michael Corrente who was the other accredited screenwriter... David`s comments: Forgettable. More teenage nostalgia, this time from 1974. Alec Baldwin is good as the father, but most of the film is familiar and undistinguished.
