Director Tony Scott, of Top Gun, Days of Thunder and Beverly Hills Cop II fame, has died In Los Angeles after taking his own life.

The LA County coroner confirmed that 68-year-old Scott's plunge from a Los Angeles County Bridge was being treated as a suicide.

The two brothers ran Scott Free Productions and were collaborating on a film called Killing Lincoln, based on the best seller by US conservative cable news commentator Bill O'Reilly.

Scott was a frequent collaborator with actor Denzel Washington; their films together include Unstoppable, Man on Fire, Deja Vu, Crimson Tide and Scott's remake of The Taking of Pelham 123.
