Pleasantville is the directorial debut of Gary Ross who wrote Big and Dave, and like those two films Pleasantville has central characters transplanted from their normal lives into something extraordinary. Jennifer and David are squabbling siblings of the 90`s who via the machinations of TV repairman Don Knotts find themselves living in David`s favourite 50`s black and white sitcom Pleasantville. They become Mary Sue and Bud, to Father William H. Macy and Mom (Joan Allen). Pleasantville is squeaky clean, there are no toilets, there`s no sex, it doesn`t rain and every basketball shot scores. Mary Sue is horrified - We`re supposed to be in colour`, she says, we`re like stuck in Nerdville.` And then she proceeds to undermine this new world, with David frantically trying to maintain the way things are supposed to be in this all-american town...This is such a clever film. It`s so original in the way it confronts the confusion of living in the 90`s in a fractured family in a scary, dangerous world with the order of the way we think it used to be. This seemingly serene life of so long ago has hidden frustrations and it only takes the efforts of Mary Sue to uncover a lot of them. The performances are just wonderful in this very satisfying film experience...
