Lior Ashkenazi plays Eyal, a Mossad assassin, whose confidence is rocked by his wife's suicide. He is re-assigned to track down Nazi war criminal Alfred Himmelman. Eyal picks up a lead via Himmelman's grandchildren. Fleeing her family's dark secret, grand-daughter Pia, played by Caroline Peters, has opted for life on a kibbutz in Israel. When her brother Axel (Knut Berger) comes to visit, Eyal latches on to him posing as a tour guide. As their relationships develop, all three are forced to re-examine the legacy of the Holocaust.
This is a thought provoking study of forgiveness. At times the narrative felt awkward, juggling so many complex issues – from homosexuality to Israeli/Palestinian relations to the Holocaust. But Eytan Fox has created a worthy political thriller that is skilfully directed, and backed up by intense performances. Walk on Water states one simple truth boldly. You have to make peace with the past to get on with the future.
