Mel Gibson is returning to the screens in the upcoming action thriller Blood Father, directed by Jean-Francois Richet, and adapted from the eponymous novel by Peter Craig (The Town), who also worked on the screenplay.

The French director is known for his Mesrine biopic Public Enemy Number 1 (available here at SBS On Demand), and the more recent One Wild Moment, both starring Vincent Cassel.

Shot in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the film follows John Link (Gibson), an ex-con working as a tattoo artist from his run-down caravan. His life changes when his estranged 16-year-old daughter (Erin Moriarty, Woody Harrelson's daughter in True Detective) resurfaces, together with a whole lot of problems, as she is being chased by angry drug dealers who are trying to kill her.

Link vows to protect her, and both embark on a dangerous journey on a red, dusty road, which sees Gibson make prolific use of a Mad Max-style sawed-off shotgun as they soon have to face their pursuers. The movie also stars William H. Macy (Room) and Elizabeth Rohm (American Hustle), will be distributed in Australia by Icon Film Distribution and should be released in August 2016.

Mel Gibson was recently in Australia to direct his own movie Hacksaw Ridge, which is currently in post-production.
