I`ve never been to a wedding where there was a wedding singer, and after seeing The Wedding Singer I`m sure I never want to. Robbie Hart, Adam Sandler, M.C`s and warbles at functions in the burbs in the mid-80`s and he`s supposed to be good at it. He`s about to get married himself, but when he meets comely waitress Julia, Drew Barrymore, at the wedding reception with which the film opens, we know for certain they`ll wind up together. So it`s no suprise when Robbie`s bride leaves him at the altar or that Julia`s fiance proves to be a chauvanist oaf.....What is suprising is that this very slight, mildly amusing, romantic comedy has been such a box office success in America... Adam Sandler tries rather too hard to make Robbie an endearing character, but the biggest laughs in the film come from the admirable Steve Buscemi, who appears only in the first and final sequences. I liked rocker Billy Idol playing a kind of bizarre fairy godmother. But otherwise, watching The Wedding Singer was a bit like attending a wedding reception where the speeches are interminable and you`ve heard the jokes before...
