Happily married Norman and Claire Spencer live in a beautiful, newly restored house by the sea in Vermont. Norman`s a workaholic scientist; Claire has time on her hands, and begins imagining things - that there`s something strange about her next door neighbours or that some mysterious spirit is trying to tell her something... This disappointing thriller from Robert Zemeckis borrows shamelessly from Hitchcock - there`s a pinch of Rear Window, a dose of Vertigo and a whole lot of Psycho, complete with a Bernard Hermann-ish music score. But it really adds up to very little, and a lot of it proves to be a gigantic and time consuming red herring. As a supernatural thriller, it gets a bit suspenseful towards the end, but it really doesn`t make a lot of sense when you come to think about it. Miranda Otto hardly registers in a tiny role; Michelle Pfeiffer has the best of it as the frightened heroine, while Harrison Ford is, dare I say it, a bit dull? What lies beneath? Not much.
