Funnyman Will Ferrell is getting serious again after signing on to play tennis star Bobby Riggs in new the new movie Match Maker.

The film will focus on the famous 1973 Battle of the Sexes showdown between Riggs and Billie Jean King.

The $US100,000 ($A108,613.01) match was set up when retired Riggs challenged woman's champ King to a court clash, convinced he could beat a female half his age.

The Houston, Texas tennis match was won by King.

Ferrell isn't new to the world of tennis and often plays - he recently hosted the 10th annual Desert Smash event in Palm Springs, California.

The role of King is yet to be cast.

It's the second movie about the Battle of the Sexes in development - British filmmaker Danny Boyle is also reportedly set to direct a biopic about King and the legendary tennis showdown.

Both films come in the wake of the 2013 documentary that examined the match and the climate of the era, The Battle of The Sexes, which played in Melbourne during the 2014 Australian Open.
