Production has started on The Dressmaker, a '50s-set comedy that brings Kate Winslet back to Australia, to play a seamstress returned from Paris.

Winslet, who shot Jane Campion’s Holy Smoke in the Flinders Ranges in 1998-9, will play a dressmaker from rural Victoria who returns from the salons of Paris to reconcile with her mother, and give her small town an extreme haute couture makeover.

Jocelyn Moorhouse is directing the film, which she has been developing for several years. It also stars Judy Davis, Liam Hemsworth and Hugo Weaving (who reteams with Moorhouse following 1991’s Proof).

"I've waited years to make this movie" said Moorhouse. "It's about my favourite subjects: revenge, love and creativity. I'm deeply grateful to have such extraordinary actors working on this with me."

The Dressmaker is currently in production in Victoria and already has a release date of October 1, 2015 through Universal Pictures.
